Jongmyo Shrine Guide (2026): Guided Tour Times, Free Saturdays and What to See

Jongmyo Shrine (종묘) is where the kings and queens of the Joseon Dynasty were honoured for over 500 years, and it’s one of the calmest places in central Seoul. Its main hall, Jeongjeon, is among the longest single wooden buildings in Asia, and the whole shrine is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The one thing to know before you go: on most weekdays you can only enter on a guided tour at set times.

How the guided tour works

  • Buy your ticket at the gate and join the next tour in your language. For individuals and small groups, no advance booking is needed.
  • Arrive 10–15 minutes early. Tours leave on time and you can’t enter between tours on weekdays.
  • The guide explains the ancestral rites, the spirit tablets and the meaning of the empty, austere design. It is very different from the colourful palaces.
  • Want to wander at your own pace? Come on a Saturday.

What to see

  • Jeongjeon (정전): the main hall, holding the spirit tablets of 19 kings and their queens. Its restoration finished in 2024 and it has reopened to view.
  • Yeongnyeongjeon (영녕전): the smaller hall for other royal ancestors.
  • The raised stone path through the grounds: the centre lane was reserved for the spirits. Walk on the sides.
  • Jongmyo Jerye: the royal ancestral rite with court music, held each year on the first Sunday of May. It’s a UNESCO-listed intangible heritage and draws big crowds.

Accessibility: strollers and wheelchairs

  • Main paths are wide, but courtyards are paved with uneven stone and some halls sit on raised stone platforms with steps.
  • Gravel and earth paths can be bumpy for small stroller wheels; a sturdy stroller or carrier is easier.
  • Ask at the ticket office about wheelchair loans and the step-free route.

Combine it with

  • A side gate leads up toward Changgyeonggung and Changdeokgung palaces (check that the gate is open on the day), so Jongmyo works well as the start of a palace morning.
  • Ikseon-dong’s hanok cafés are a 10-minute walk away for lunch.
  • Visiting several palaces? Our Gyeongbokgung guide covers the biggest one, and Bukchon is between them.

How long does a visit take?

The weekday guided tour takes about an hour. On Saturdays, when you can wander freely, most people spend 45 minutes to an hour and a half. The grounds are wooded and quiet, so it’s a good break between busier sights.

What should you know before you walk in?

  • The raised stone path down the middle of the grounds is the spirit path, traditionally reserved for the spirits; walk on the lower paths on either side.
  • Jongmyo is a place of ancestral rites, not a palace: keep your voice down and don’t climb on the stone platforms.
  • Photos are fine outdoors; follow staff instructions near the halls.

When is the royal ancestral rite?

Jongmyo Jerye, the royal ancestral rite with court music and dance (listed by UNESCO as intangible heritage), is held every year in early May, traditionally on the first Sunday. It draws big crowds; check the Korea Heritage Service announcement for the date and any viewing tickets.
