October 21, 2026 | by Korea Bestie
Hongdae (홍대) is the area around Hongik University in western Seoul, and it’s where the city goes to be young: street performers, indie music, cheap food, vintage shops and clubs that close at dawn. It’s also one of the most convenient bases in Seoul, with a direct train from Incheon Airport. This Hongdae guide explains how the neighbourhood fits together, which subway exit to use, and how to spend a day, with links to our detailed guides on food, cafés, shopping and nightlife.
Last checked: October 2026. Dollar figures use about 1,330 KRW = 1 USD (October 2026).

What is Hongdae known for?
Hongdae (홍대) takes its name from Hongik University (홍익대학교), one of Korea’s top art schools, and it has been Seoul’s center of youth culture for decades: busking on the main streets, live clubs and indie music, vintage and design shops, and plenty of cheap food and late-night bars. It’s also very practical: the AREX train runs straight from Incheon Airport to Hongik University Station. For quieter streets, cross into Yeonnam-dong; for nightlife, see Hongdae at night.
