Best Hongdae Cafes (2026): 7 Hongdae and Yeonnam Cafes Worth Finding

October 21, 2026 | by Korea Bestie

hongdae-cafes-hero

Hongdae cafes are some of the most playful in Seoul: a roastery in a former shoe factory, a café where you sit on a mound of bricks, a hanok courtyard where you roast marshmallows, and a five-floor Harry Potter café. Most of the best ones are just north of Hongik University Station in Yeonnam-dong (연남동), along the Gyeongui Line Forest Park, with a few classics south toward Hapjeong. Here are seven Hongdae and Yeonnam cafés that 2026 guides still list as open, with addresses, hours and what to order.

From Exit 3 of Hongik University Station you walk straight into the Gyeongui Line Forest Park (경의선숲길), a former railway turned into a long, narrow park. Locals call the Yeonnam stretch “Yeontral Park”. Most of the Yeonnam cafés are in the lanes either side of it.

Yeonnam-dong cafes

1. Coffee Nap Roasters (커피냅로스터스 연남): sit on a mound of bricks

Coffee Nap Roasters is a roaster whose Yeonnam café is famous for its seating: instead of chairs, a low mound built of red bricks fills the room, and people perch on it with their coffee. It’s become one of the most photographed cafés in Yeonnam. The coffee is good too; a 2025 guide listed filter coffee at about 6,000 KRW (~$5) and espresso at 5,000 KRW.

  • Hours: 2025–2026 listings disagree (daytime-only in one, 9 am–10 pm in another), so check Naver Map.
  • Tip: the brick mound isn’t comfortable for long. It’s a stop-and-photo café, not a laptop café.

2. Cafe Layered (레이어드 연남): scones in an English cottage

Cafe Layered looks like a countryside bakery in England: wooden shelves, floral cups and a counter stacked with big scones in flavours like classic butter, matcha and Earl Grey fig, plus layer cakes. It’s been a favourite with visitors for years and has a second branch near Anguk Station (by Bukchon). Honest note: a 2026 review found the scones on the dry side, so ask for clotted cream or jam on the side.

  • Tip: weekend afternoons mean a queue for a seat. Go at opening, or take scones away to eat in the Forest Park.

3. Antique Coffee (앤티크커피 연남): flowers and cream coffee

Antique Coffee’s Yeonnam branch is a flower-filled room known for pretty desserts and cream-topped coffee drinks, the kind of café Korean friends visit for photos. It’s a short walk from Exit 3. One visitor reported walking in without a queue at 3 pm on a weekend, but reservations aren’t taken.

4. Mandong Bakery (만동제과): the garlic baguette

Mandong Bakery started in Gangneung on the east coast, and its Seoul shop on Yeonhui-ro is a small, takeaway-only bakery known for its garlic baguette (마늘바게트): soft bread soaked in garlic butter. Korean reviewers also like the onion bagel. Buy one and eat it in the Forest Park.

5. Anthracite Hapjeong (앤트러사이트 합정): coffee in an old shoe factory

Anthracite opened its first café in a former shoe factory in Hapjeong, and it helped start Seoul’s fashion for industrial cafés. The building keeps its raw concrete, old machinery and big communal tables, and the house-roasted coffee is the main event. Prices aren’t cheap (a 2026 review complained about an 8,000 KRW drip coffee at another branch), but the room is worth it.

  • Hours (as listed in October 2026): daily 9 am–10 pm.
  • Getting there: about a 10-minute walk from Hapjeong Station (Lines 2 and 6) or Sangsu Station (Line 6).

6. Sin Lee Doga (신이도가): a hanok café with marshmallows

Sin Lee Doga is a café in a traditional hanok house with a courtyard, tucked into the lanes of Seogyo-dong between Hongdae and Hapjeong. The draw is the fire in the middle (a gas fire pit) where you roast marshmallows, plus hand-brewed coffee, teas and Korean-style desserts such as yanggaeng (sweet bean jelly).

  • Hours (as listed in October 2026): daily 11 am–10 pm.
  • Good to know: no parking and no dogs, per Korean listings.

7. 943 King’s Cross (943 킹스크로스): the Harry Potter café

943 King’s Cross is a fan-made, unofficial Harry Potter-themed café spread over several floors near Exit 9. The ground floor sells wizarding goods and has a photo zone, the upper floors are dressed like Hogwarts halls, and you can borrow school robes and props for photos. The basement is a bar that opens in the evening.

  • Hours (as listed in October 2026): Mon–Thu 11:30 am–8:30 pm; Fri–Sun 10 am–9:30 pm.
  • Tip: it’s busiest on weekend afternoons. Go on a weekday morning if you want photos without crowds.

Hongdae café tips

  • One drink per person is the rule in most Korean cafés, even if you’re sharing a cake.
  • Most cafés open late (11 am or noon). For an early coffee, Anthracite and the big chains near the station open earlier.
  • Restrooms are often shared with the building and may need a code. It’s printed on your receipt.
  • Eating first? See our Hongdae restaurants guide.
