Itaewon (이태원) is Seoul’s international neighbourhood: a hillside district below Namsan where you’ll find food from every continent, Korea’s main mosque, craft beer and cocktail bars, and the city’s most diverse nightlife. Around it are the café lanes of Haebangchon and Gyeongnidan-gil and the boutiques of Hannam-dong. This Itaewon guide shows how it all fits together, with links to our detailed guides.

Last checked: October 2026. Dollar figures use about 1,330 KRW = 1 USD (October 2026).

Quick answer

  • Where is it? Itaewon Station (Line 6), Exits 1–2, for the main strip; about 20 minutes from Myeongdong by subway or taxi.
  • Best for? International food, nightlife, halal restaurants, craft beer and design shopping in Hannam-dong.
  • Is it safe? Generally yes; since the 2022 crowd crush, weekend crowds are managed more carefully. Avoid packed lanes at peak times.
  • How long? Half a day and an evening; a full day if you add Hannam-dong, Leeum or the War Memorial.

What are the best things to do in Itaewon?

  1. Eat your way around the world: Korean BBQ, smokehouse barbecue, tacos, kebabs, Nigerian and Indian food (restaurant guide).
  2. Visit Seoul Central Mosque: Korea’s largest, opened in 1976, with a view over the neighbourhood. Dress modestly.
  3. Walk Haebangchon and Gyeongnidan-gil for cafés by day and rooftop bars at sunset.
  4. Leeum Museum of Art in Hannam-dong for Korean treasures and contemporary art (book ahead; closed Mondays) (Hannam-dong guide).
  5. War Memorial of Korea: a large free museum about the Korean War, a 10-minute walk from Samgakji Station or a short taxi from Itaewon. Closed Mondays.
  6. Browse Itaewon’s antique furniture street near Noksapyeong for Korean and European antiques.
  7. Go up Namsan: N Seoul Tower is a short taxi ride away (N Seoul Tower guide).

What is Itaewon nightlife like?

  • Craft beer: Gyeongnidan-gil and the strip have well-known taprooms such as Magpie Brewing Co.
  • Cocktails: Haebangchon and Hannam have small cocktail bars, some using Korean ingredients.
  • Clubs: the main strip’s clubs pick up after midnight and run until dawn on weekends. Bring your passport as ID.
  • LGBTQ+ scene: Itaewon has Seoul’s best-known LGBTQ+-friendly bars, on the lane locals call “Homo Hill”.
  • Safety: in October 2022, a crowd crush in a narrow alley beside the Hamilton Hotel killed 159 people during Halloween. Crowds are now actively managed; still, avoid the tightest lanes at peak times and leave if a crowd feels unsafe.

How do you get to Itaewon?
