Here’s where to eat, what it costs, and which street to head for.

Good to know for foreign visitors

  • Payment: foreign cards work almost everywhere in Itaewon; small stalls may prefer cash (money in Korea).
  • English: Itaewon has more English menus and English-speaking staff than any other area of Seoul.
  • Korean BBQ usually has a two-portion minimum; solo diners do better with soups, kebabs or tacos.
  • Vegetarian and vegan: Itaewon and neighbouring Hannam-dong have Seoul’s widest choice of plant-based restaurants.
  • Halal: the lanes up toward Seoul Central Mosque have Korea’s densest cluster of halal restaurants (see our halal food in Itaewon guide).
  • Tipping isn’t expected, even in Western-style restaurants.

Is Itaewon safe at night?

  • Generally, yes: it’s one of Seoul’s busiest nightlife areas and well policed. Since the 2022 Halloween crowd crush in a narrow lane by the Hamilton Hotel, crowds are managed more carefully.
  • Avoid the most packed alleys at peak times on weekend nights, and leave if a crowd feels too tight.
  • The subway runs until around midnight; after that, use Kakao T for a taxi.
