This Myeongdong itinerary fits Seoul’s busiest shopping district and its best viewpoint into one afternoon: a 19th-century cathedral, K-beauty shops, a cable car up Namsan, sunset at N Seoul Tower and dinner from the street-food stalls that open in the evening. It’s ideal for a first day in Seoul, especially if you’re staying in Myeongdong.

Last checked: October 2026. Facts come from our Myeongdong and Namsan guides; shops and hours change, so confirm on Naver Map on the day. Dollar figures use about 1,330 KRW = 1 USD (October 2026).

Quick answer

  • Time: about 4–5 hours; start around 2 p.m. to reach the tower for sunset.
  • Start / end: Myeongdong Station (Line 4) — finish back in Myeongdong for street food.
  • Budget: N Seoul Tower observatory 29,000 KRW (~$22) if you go up; the plaza and love locks are free.
  • Best day: any clear day; street food is best from about 4–5 p.m.
  • Cheaper way up Namsan: the 01A/01B bus instead of the cable car.

What will I see at each stop?

1. Myeongdong Cathedral (명동성당)

Start at Myeongdong Cathedral, completed in 1898 and Korea’s first Gothic-style church. It’s free to look around the grounds; be quiet inside if a service is on. From Myeongdong Station (Line 4) or Euljiro 1-ga (Line 2) it’s a short walk.

3. Namsan Cable Car (남산 케이블카)

Walk uphill to the Namsan cable car station (about 15 minutes, with steps). The cable car is the quickest way up but the priciest; the 01A/01B bus is a cheap alternative.

4. N Seoul Tower (N서울타워)

At the top, the plaza, Palgakjeong pavilion and love-lock fences are free; the observatory costs about 29,000 KRW. Arrive an hour before sunset to see the city by day, at dusk and lit up. Details in our N Seoul Tower guide.

5. Myeongdong street food (명동 길거리음식)

Come back down to Myeongdong as the food stalls set up along the main lanes in the evening: tornado potatoes, grilled lobster, egg bread, skewers and hotteok. Our Myeongdong street food guide has prices and what to try.

How can I change the route?

  • Rainy day: skip Namsan and spend longer in the Lotte and Shinsegae department stores and their food halls.
  • Morning version: do Namsan first for clear views, then shop in the afternoon; the food stalls still open later.
  • Add a market: Namdaemun Market is a 10-minute walk west of Myeongdong: Namdaemun guide.

Tips for this route

  • The walk up to the cable car is steep; wear comfortable shoes.
  • Queues for the cable car and observatory are longest at sunset on weekends.
  • Carry some cash for street food, though many stalls now take cards.

Is this route accessible?

The cable car and the tower are accessible once you reach the lower station, but the walk up from Myeongdong is steep with stairs; take a taxi to the cable car station instead. Myeongdong’s main streets are flat but very crowded in the evening.
