Starfield Library at COEX (2026): Opening Hours, How to Get There and Photo Tips
October 29, 2026 | by Korea Bestie
Starfield Library (별마당도서관) is the giant open library in the middle of COEX Mall in Gangnam: two-story-high bookshelves holding tens of thousands of books and magazines, under a skylit atrium. It’s free, open late and one of the most photographed indoor spots in Seoul, which makes it a perfect stop on a rainy, hot or freezing day.
Last checked: October 2026. Hours follow the mall and can change; check the COEX Mall site before you go.

What is Starfield Library?
Opened in 2017 inside COEX Mall, the library was designed as a public reading space rather than a lending library. Its huge shelves, about 13 m high, hold a collection usually cited at around 50,000 books and magazines in Korean and other languages. There are long tables and seats where anyone can sit and read, plus changing art installations in the central hall.
How do I get good photos?
- Arrive early. Just after the mall opens on a weekday, you’ll share the shelves with only a few people.
- Shoot from the upper level or the escalators for the full height of the shelves.
- Use a wide lens or your phone’s 0.5x mode; the shelves are too tall to fit otherwise.
- Be considerate: people are reading. Avoid flash, tripods at busy times and blocking walkways.
- Look for the seasonal installations in the central hall; they change through the year.

How do I get to Starfield Library?
- Line 2: Samseong Station (삼성역), Exits 5 or 6. Follow signs for COEX Mall; the library is in the middle of the mall, signposted throughout.
- Line 9: Bongeunsa Station (봉은사역), Exit 7, then walk into the mall.
- From Myeongdong or Hongdae: Line 2 to Samseong, about 35–50 minutes.

What else is there to do at COEX?
- COEX Mall: one of Asia’s largest underground malls, with fashion, K-beauty, bookshops, a cinema and many restaurants.
- COEX Aquarium (paid) inside the mall.
- The big outdoor screens at COEX K-POP Square near the mall entrance, famous for their 3D “wave” displays.
- Bongeunsa Temple (봉은사): a Buddhist temple across the road, free to visit and a calm contrast to the mall. Some temples in Seoul offer temple-stay programs; check Bongeunsa’s site if you’re interested.

How long should I spend there?
The library itself takes 20–40 minutes. With lunch in the mall, a look at the screens and a walk to Bongeunsa, COEX is an easy half day, and it’s all indoors except the temple. Combine it with Seoul Sky at Lotte World Tower, a short ride east on Line 2.
Where can I eat or drink near Starfield Library?
COEX Mall has food courts, Korean chains, international restaurants and plenty of cafés, many within a few minutes’ walk of the library. Prices are typical mall prices. For a sit-down Korean meal, the streets around Samseong Station have office-worker restaurants that are good value at lunch. Food and drinks aren’t meant to be taken onto the library seats.
Is Starfield Library accessible?
Yes. The library is on the mall’s main floor with elevators and escalators, wide walkways and no steps from the subway. Seats fill up at weekends, so if you need a place to sit, come early. Strollers are fine, but the area can be crowded in the afternoon.
A rainy-day plan around COEX
- Morning: Starfield Library for photos before it gets busy.
- Late morning: COEX Aquarium or a wander through the mall’s shops and bookstores.
- Lunch: the mall’s food courts or a Korean restaurant near Samseong Station.
- Afternoon: Line 2 to Jamsil for Seoul Sky or Lotte World Mall, all indoors from the station.
More tips
- The library is part of a busy mall, so it isn’t silent; it’s more a lounge than a study space.
- Put books back where you found them so the shelves stay tidy for the next visitor.
- Combine it with Bongeunsa Temple across the road for a quiet contrast to the mall.
