Dongdaemun Design Plaza, or DDP, is Seoul’s most futuristic building: a flowing silver landmark designed by Zaha Hadid, opened in 2014 on the site of an old stadium. Inside are exhibition halls, design shops and event spaces; outside are grassy roofs, public plazas and, after dark, lights reflecting off 45,000 aluminium panels. Here’s what to see, what costs money and how to combine it with Dongdaemun’s late-night shopping.

Last checked: October 2026. Exhibition schedules and hours change; check the official DDP site before you go. Dollar figures use about 1,330 KRW = 1 USD (October 2026).

Quick answer

  • Is DDP free? Yes, the building, plazas, design store and rooftop paths are free; most exhibitions are ticketed separately.
  • Opening hours? Generally around 10:00–20:00 for indoor spaces (varies by hall and show); the outdoor plazas are open around the clock.
  • How to get there? Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station (Lines 2, 4, 5), Exit 1, connects directly.
  • Best time? Late afternoon into evening: see an exhibition, then the building lit up at night.

What is there to see at DDP?

  • The architecture: walk around and through the building. There are no straight lines or flat façades, and the rooftop is a grassy park you can climb.
  • Exhibitions: Art Hall and the design museum host changing shows, from fashion and design to K-pop and character exhibitions. Some events are free with online registration; most major shows are ticketed.
  • Dongdaemun History & Culture Park: remains of the old city wall and a stadium lighting tower, preserved on the grounds.
  • Design shops: the DDP Design Store sells Korean design goods and souvenirs.
  • Seoul Fashion Week is held here twice a year (spring and autumn).

Is DDP worth visiting at night?

  • Yes. After sunset the panels glow and the plazas are lit, making it one of Seoul’s best night photo spots.
  • DDP’s façade is used for large media-art light shows on some evenings and during festivals (such as Seoul Light DDP in past winters). Dates vary year to year, so check the official site for 2026.
  • On some spring and autumn weekends, Seoul has held night food markets at DDP in past years; check Seoul’s official listings for current dates.

What about Dongdaemun’s late-night shopping?

  • DDP sits in the middle of the Dongdaemun fashion district, where big fashion malls and wholesale buildings trade into the night, a tradition from its days as Seoul’s garment wholesale centre.
  • Retail malls aimed at visitors stay open late into the evening; wholesale buildings open at night mainly for shop owners and may not sell single items.
  • Prices are lower than in department stores; bargaining is possible at some stalls (Myeongdong shopping for comparison).
  • Nearby food: Gwangjang Market’s food alley is one stop away on Line 1 or a 15-minute walk (Gwangjang guide).

How do you get to DDP?

  • Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station (Lines 2, 4, 5), Exit 1: connects directly to DDP’s underground level.
  • From Myeongdong: two stops on Line 4. From Gwangjang Market: about 15 minutes on foot.
  • Heunginjimun (Dongdaemun Gate), the old east gate of Seoul, is a 5-minute walk north.

Good to know

  • Accessibility: DDP is largely step-free, with ramps, lifts and wide paths, one of the easiest landmarks in Seoul for wheelchairs and strollers.
  • Tickets: buy popular exhibitions online in advance; some sell out at weekends.
  • Bags: shopping in Dongdaemun? Lockers at the station help (Seoul luggage storage).
  • December: combine DDP with the city’s winter lights (Seoul Christmas market 2026).
