Korean pharmacies (약국, yakguk) sell a small range of “derma” skincare you won’t always find at Olive Young: soothing centella creams, scar ointments, acne spot treatments and the PDRN creams that went viral online. Here’s what tourists actually buy, and how to ask for help when the pharmacist’s English is limited.

How to find a pharmacy

  • Look for the character 약 on a sign, often with a green cross. They’re on almost every busy street.
  • In tourist areas like Myeongdong, Hongdae and Gangnam, some pharmacies cater to visitors with English signs and tax-free shopping. Look for a “Tax Free” sticker.
  • Search 약국 in Naver Map to see opening hours. Most close in the evening, and only a few are open late or on Sundays.

What tourists look for

  • Centella (cica) creams. Centella asiatica is the soothing plant behind Madecassol, the wound ointment Dongkook Pharmaceutical has sold since the 1980s. The same company’s Centellian24 Madeca Cream is one of the most-bought pharmacy creams among visitors.
  • PDRN creams. PDRN (salmon DNA) creams, such as the Rejuran line from PharmaResearch, the company behind Rejuran skin-booster injections, are the viral pharmacy buy of the last few years. Several brands now make them, so compare a couple before you choose.
  • Scar and wound care. Madecassol ointment and silicone scar gels are classic pharmacy items. Koreans keep them in every home.
  • Acne spot treatments and patches. Spot creams such as Acnon and hydrocolloid pimple patches are cheap and easy to pack.
  • Lip and hand care for dry winters, and basic sunscreen.

Some of these brands are now also sold at Olive Young. The pharmacy advantage is the pharmacist, and pharmacy-only lines such as certain PDRN creams.

Do you have a scar ointment?
  • Show a photo of the product on your phone. That’s the fastest way, especially if you saw it online.
  • Pharmacists can’t sell prescription medicine without a Korean prescription. Skincare and basic medicines are fine.
  • Feeling actually unwell? See emergency numbers and hospitals, or call 1330 for interpreting help.

Shopping tips

  • Tax refund: only stores with a Tax Free sign can give one. Bring your physical passport (how tax refunds work).
  • Check the box for the newest version. Korean creams are reformulated often. Season numbers on the box tell you which one you have.
  • Patch test new actives before using them on your whole face, especially on sensitive skin.

Refill at home (Amazon)

Ran out after the trip? Some of these Korean skincare items are also sold on Amazon. Prescription and pharmacy-only products are not, so buy those in Korea.
