Best Hongdae Restaurants (2026): 7 Places to Eat in Hongdae and Yeonnam
October 20, 2026 | by Korea Bestie
Hongdae restaurants run from cheap student food to queues out the door for a single bowl of soup. The area around Hongik University (홍대) is Seoul’s youth and music district, and the food follows: late-night tteokbokki, sizzling dakgalbi, Korean BBQ that runs past midnight, plus quieter, more grown-up places in Yeonnam-dong (연남동) to the north. This guide picks seven Hongdae and Yeonnam restaurants that 2026 guides and Korean review sites still list as open, with addresses to show a taxi driver, subway exits, hours and what to order.
Last checked: October 2026. Dollar figures use about 1,330 KRW = 1 USD (October 2026). Hours and prices change often, so check Naver Map on the day.

Hongdae has two food zones. Exit 9 of Hongik University Station leads into the main streets: cheap, loud and open late. Exit 3 leads to Yeonnam-dong and the Gyeongui Line Forest Park, where restaurants are smaller and queues are calmer at lunch. Okdongsik is a short walk south, near Hapjeong Station.
Korean classics
1. Okdongsik (옥동식): the Michelin-listed pork soup

Okdongsik serves one thing: dwaeji gomtang, a clear pork soup with thin slices of pork over rice, a lighter cousin of the beef bone soups Seoul is known for. It’s listed in the Michelin Guide Seoul as a Bib Gourmand (good food at a moderate price), and the room is tiny. The Michelin Guide notes about 10 seats and a limit of around 100 bowls a day, so it can sell out.
- Hours (Michelin Guide listing): Mon–Fri 11 am–3 pm and 5–10 pm; Sat–Sun 11 am–8:30 pm. Other listings differ slightly, so check before you go.
- Price: roughly 8,000–14,000 KRW (~$6–11) in 2026 guides.
- Tip: expect a short wait even on weekdays. Go right at opening, and add the kimchi and a little of the chili paste to the soup halfway through.

2. Yook-Mong (육몽): charcoal BBQ that stays open late
Yook-Mong is a busy charcoal BBQ restaurant near Exit 9, grilling pork cuts and beef brisket over real charcoal. A 2026 Hongdae food guide picked the brisket (around 19,000 KRW, ~$14, a portion), and it’s open late, so it works as a first dinner after a night flight or a long day.
- Hours (as listed in 2026): Mon–Thu 11:30 am–midnight; Fri–Sun 11:30 am–1 am.
- Good to know: like most Korean BBQ, you’ll usually need to order at least two portions.

3. Yoogane (유가네닭갈비): dakgalbi, then fried rice in the same pan
Yoogane is a chain, but it’s a dependable, cheap way to try dakgalbi: spicy chicken, cabbage and rice cakes stir-fried at your table. Save room for the best part: staff fry rice with seaweed and cheese in the leftover sauce at the end. Expect about 10,000–20,000 KRW (~$8–15) per person.
- Hours (as listed in 2026): 11:30 am–11 pm.
- Spice: ask for less spicy (덜 맵게, deol maepge) if you’re unsure.

4. Solsot Yeonnam (솔솥 연남점): rice cooked to order in a stone pot
Solsot cooks sotbap, rice made to order in a small pot with toppings on top. The steak pot and the sea bream and scallop pot are the ones reviewers recommend. When you’ve eaten the rice, pour hot water or tea into the pot to loosen the crispy layer at the bottom (nurungji). It’s one of the easiest solo meals in Yeonnam.
- Hours (as listed in 2026): 11:30 am–9 pm. Price: about 15,000–24,000 KRW (~$11–18).
- Tip: it doesn’t take reservations, and tables turn slowly at lunch. Arrive before opening.

5. Hongdae Jopok Tteokbokki (홍대조폭떡볶이): the late-night classic

This tteokbokki shop started as a food truck in 1987, according to Korean food writers, and is still a late-night stop for students and clubbers. Order the spicy tteokbokki (around 5,500 KRW, ~$4, in a 2026 guide) and add sundae (Korean blood sausage) or fried snacks (튀김, twigim) to dip in the sauce.
- Where: the branch most guides send you to is “Branch 2”, a few minutes from Hongik University Station. Korean listings give more than one address, so search the name in Naver Map.
Japanese favourites with a Seoul twist
6. Uwa (우와): okonomiyaki made without flour
Uwa makes okonomiyaki (Japanese savoury pancakes) with grated yam instead of wheat flour, which makes them unusually soft and light. Korean reviews recommend the tomato and shrimp okonomiyaki (about 17,000 KRW, ~$12, in recent listings) and the classic pork yakisoba (about 16,000 KRW).
- Hours: roughly noon–10 pm with a mid-afternoon break on some days. Listings vary, so check Naver Map.
- Waitlist: there’s a CatchTable machine at the bottom of the stairs. Register there without going up to the second floor.

7. Tsukeru (츠케루): thick tsukemen dipping noodles
Tsukeru specialises in tsukemen: thick, chewy noodles served separately from a rich, salty dipping broth. A 2026 Hongdae food guide put it around 12,000 KRW (~$9) and warned that lines form before opening and it often sells out early. Korean reviewers are split on how salty the broth is. If you like strong flavours, you’ll love it.

Good to know for foreign visitors
- Payment: foreign Visa and Mastercard work almost everywhere. Some small places prefer cash, so carry a little (money in Korea).
- Ordering: many restaurants use a table tablet or a kiosk by the door. Most have an English button; if not, point at the photos.
- Waitlists: popular places use a waitlist machine (often CatchTable) at the door. You enter a phone number and get a text when it’s your turn. A Korean number helps; otherwise ask staff to call your name.
- Solo diners: Korean BBQ and some stews have a two-portion minimum. Soup, noodle and rice-pot places are the easy solo choices.
- Vegetarian: broths are usually meat- or anchovy-based. Show this:
- Halal: none of the places here are halal-certified. Itaewon, near the Seoul Central Mosque, has the most halal restaurants.
- Tipping isn’t expected. Water and side dishes (banchan) are free and refilled on request.
When to go
- Lunch is the easiest time for popular places, especially in Yeonnam.
- Friday and Saturday nights are packed around Exit 9 from about 7 pm, and BBQ places stay busy until midnight.
- Carrying bags? Drop them first: Hongdae luggage storage.
